Making paper craft models is easy to do with today's printers. Free paper models, are easy to make. All that is really needed is a printer, preferably a color printer, some scissors and some Elmer's glue. Then you simply print out the pattern, cut it out and glue it together. The preferred type of paper to use to build the models is card stock but if you don't have any card stock on hand you can also glue a second sheet a paper to the back of the pattern after you print it out.
There are many places to find the patterns on the internet, some will cost a few bucks but there are a lot of free ones too. You can find Space Shuttle models and Star Trek models. Some free paper models, are very easy to build, and some are a real challenge. Most paper craft models will include some sort of instructions for the assembly, some are well done with drawings and diagrams in a step by step process. And another popular method is a series of pictures showing the assembly process.
Most of the time free paper models, will be in a PDF format, which is the native format for Adobe Acrobat Reader, that can be downloaded for free, and is easy to install and use. And a utility for file compression that can handle files in the zip format is also needed, that too can be downloaded and installed for free, the most popular one is WinZip.
Besides being free another great thing about paper craft models is the availability of models that the large manufactures of models won't make since there is just not a really big demand for such models, or ones that are out of production and very hard to find.
